DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHS

This section contains some of the thousands of photographs I've taken which document the construction process as there is much more to see than what appears in my digital drawings and films. I am grouping the photographs thematically although there is inevitably some overlap. I am grateful to those who have given me permission to include their photographs, who I credit as appropriate. It will take time for me to get these on the web site, so this section is very much a work in progress.  I started to upload these photographs in 2023, and while I continued to document the construction processes which have moved from the actual Viking Energy Wind Farm to infrastructure related to the substation in Lerwick and the cabling required to link it to the Kergord Converter Station, I didn't add any to this web site until beginning again in April 2026. Much has changed, including new vegetation growing in the cable tracks. Sadly much of it doesn't seem to reflect the promised native species that are supposed to support biodiversity.

Construction and installation of overground cables from Kergord Converter Station to Lerwick Sub-station

Different stages of the construction of the cross-country cable routes that connect the 16  turbine arrays to the converter sub-station at Kergord.

Extensive preparatory work was required for installation of the wind turbines and cable trenches.

Vehicles everywhere in a landscape which had not witnessed such a plethora of alien inhabitants, many brought specially to Shetland for the job.

SIGNAGE - the landscape is littered now with new signage. The What3Words designations are often amusing.

Bird Scarers are put in places where construction is planned so that birds don't nest, because construction is not allowed to take place when birds are nesting.
